What's next for The Atlanta City Design?

One of my favorite projects from a municipal government is The Atlanta City Design from Atlanta's Department of City Planning. https://www.atlcitydesign.com/

It's a beautiful example of what a local government can do for the people it serves. The authors did amazingly well of making sure the entire design proposal stayed true to its core values:

  • Equity

  • Progress

  • Ambition

  • Access

  • Nature

All of the ideas and strategic actions posed feed on these core values. And all together, these values paint a vision of an Atlanta everyone here can proudly call their home.

But these ideas were presented in 2017 - six, going on seven, years ago. Which makes me wonder:

  • What progress have we made on the proposed strategic actions?

  • What have the original contributors learned since the first release?

  • What should we continue? What should we stop? What should we start?

  • What's next?

I know the biggest sting for me is how Cop City sprung up, essentially out of nowhere, and has drastically impeded on visions for the South River Park. The Atlanta City Design set such high goals and vision for the green space, that being in the current reality is extremely painful.

I'd really love to hear more from the contributors to the project on the questions above to see what's possible next for our city of Atlanta, fighting for its soul.
